Mers Les Bains - Quartier balneaire

Mers les Bains is a peaceful seaside town in Normandy. It's very close to its more lively 'sister town' of Le Treport, and it's other 'sister' the beautiful market town of Eu - which lies just inland of Mers les Bains.

This small, but elegant resort has a splendid sea front with a row of "listed" villas. When the Le Treport - Paris railway was first built, the resort soon became popular with the people of Paris, who arrived by steam train. By the mid 1860's, Mers les Bains was a popular resort for bathing. The sea front was divided into building plots facing the sea which were soon bought by wealthy Parisiens and people from the north of France. Because of the limited length of the front, the Villas were built in the with very narrow frontages. The Ceramics used with the villas are especially worth seeing.

Mers les Bains has also a market, cafes, restauants and an auction room with many interesting items to tempt.

The peaceful resort is only 15 minutes from Criel sur Mer.

Autumn & Winter - Weekend Lets

From now until Christmas we are offering weekend lets only - due to high demand during the weekdays. Lets are available for Friday evening, Saturdays and Sundays.

Autumn and winter in Criel sur Mer offer a pleasant getaway for the weekend. Dieppe market has interesting shopping opportunities, and the towns of Eu and Le Treport are also well worth a visit.

The very popular Eu market is held every Friday morning in the centre of Eu, near to the beautiful chateau. The market is within the historic streets of Eu and this makes a great trip from Criel sur Mer. The town of Eu is a 13 minute drive from Criel. Parking is available near to the chateau, although it's best to arrive early to find a space.

The Battle of Agincourt

Each July, you can visit Agincourt and watch the reenactment of the famous battle. The real battle took place on the 25th October 1415. Here is a picture of the event taken last year by friends in Normandy. The battle takes place a few hours drive north of Criel sur Mer.

Mont Joli Hike-Part Three

Here is a view of Criel plage from the top of the cliffs. From here all the walking is downhill. If you want you can return the same way, or take the quicker route along the country lane from the beach to the village.

After about half an hour you will pass out of the woods and arrive at the top of the cliffs which overlook the English Channel and Criel Plage.

There is an enjoyable walk from Criel Sur Mer village to Criel plage which takes you over Mont Joli. The walk takes about an hour from the village to the beach, and passes through woodland on the way. About half way through the woods you will come to a fork in the path. If you take the right fork you will come to the beach.

Wine Tasting in Criel sur Mer, Normandy

I've just come back from a wine tasting session at the village grocery shop (Proxi) on the high street of Criel sur Mer. The shop runs regular wine tasting sessions; where you have the chance to try interesting, but reasonably priced wines. The shop always stocks a small, but good range of wines. I tried a Ruat Petit Poujeaux (2007) costing 6.85E a bottle, which went down very well. I also tried the Sylvaner Cuvee Reservee (2007) at 4.95E which was also enjoyable.

The village of Criel sur Mer has several shops, including the charcuterie pictured below, two boulangeries, a newsagents, a general store with a good selection of wines, a supermarket a few minutes drive away, two banks (one with an ATM), a post office, a bar and some restaurants. All of this is, apart from the supermarket, is on the high street, only a few minutes walk from the apartment.
